Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I learned to do therapeutic massage while in college, over 40 years ago. I did not become a professional in the field until attending massage school overt 15 years ago. I received academic honors in massage school and became Nationally Certified (NCBTMB) shortly afterward. Since then I have been continuously in practice. I have gone to homes, businesses, and nursing homes. I worked in a fitness center, a chiropractic office, and participated in health fairs. I currently travel to my clients' homes within a half-hour of Mars. I like to keep learning and sharpening my skills.
What is your primary product or service?
I am a massage therapist specializing in seniors. Once we pass our fiftieth birthday, our aches and pains get to be a little more persistent than with younger folks. My goal is to improve the health and function of those muscles and joints that make us feel older than we want to feel. I use primarily Swedish massage techniques with more advanced methods including neuromuscular, trigger point, myofascial and others. I give a 25% discount to seniors, age 50 and up.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I learned about therapeutic massage by making a big mistake. Like most of us "70's" college students, I was convinced I could give great back rubs -- until I rubbed too hard on a fellow with broken ribs! That's why I decided to learn to recognize injured tissues by touch. I am most interested in therapies that speed healing and improve muscle function.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I have many years of "hands-on" practice. I also have a deep understanding of the medical side of massage as used in health care. That's because I have had twelve years experience as a nurse's aide, primarily with geriatrics. I view massage as a way to affect total health. Sometimes I work muscle-by-muscle, and sometimes I am focusing on the systems (posture, digestion, sleep, mood and many more) that can help or can interfere with healing. It's a kind of learned wisdom that adapts my skills for each person.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
I am providing all of my services to clients in their homes. If the Covid-19 pandemic becomes controlled and I can adapt a home office to the increased sanitation standards that the pandemic created, I will also see clients in my home. (I have no idea how to sanitize a brick hearth and fireplace between clients, for example.)
Provide detailed directions to your location
To protect my clients, I will not be providing any massage therapy services until there is "no community spread of Covid-19."
What type of payments do you accept?
I am happy to accept cash, major credit cards, or local checks.
Which areas do you service?
My primary area is Mars and its surrounding communities. For in-home visits, I like to be within a half-hour drive of Mars, but there is no extra charge if you can't come to either of my office locations.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I am the owner and only employee of this business.
What are your hours of operation?
To protect my clients, I will not be providing any massage therapy services until there is "no community spread of Covid-19."
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
The best praise I can receive is a client who heals because of my services, especially if they refer others!
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
"First of all, do no harm."
